Bach Dinh or “The White Palace” is Vung Tau"s nicest colonial era mansion. It was built as a retreat for French Governor General Paul Doumer at the beginning of the twentieth century. Vung Tau"s White Palace is perched 50 metres up the "Big Mountain" and enjoys wonderful views along the Front coast in central of Vung Tau.
The White Palace was constructed in 1898 on the site of a Nguyen Dynasty fortress that was demolished by the French to make way for a retreat for Governor General Paul Doumer. The palace was designed with Romain architectural style of modern, 3 storey,19m high (basement, ground floor and the floor). Around three main walls of the building has 8 stone statues busts art style of ancient Roman. On the left of the building is the original path with 146 stairs.
This place is the house arrest of patriotic Thanh Thai King as well as recreation place for superior Indochina Governor Generals and the last King of Vietnam, Bao Dai and his wife.
Dated from 1992, the White Palace was recognized as a historic national culture museum displaying thousands of antiques and artifacts recovered on the shipwreck at Hon Cau sea, Con Dao in the 17th century.
The White Palace is one of the most famous monuments and attracts more tourists to visit this place on the tour to Vung Tau.
